In March, The Waypoint Amateur Radio Club, WA0RC, held its annual FM simplex contest, departing from the April tradition of previous years. While the rules were similar to last year’s, the key changes for 2026 were the additions of the 1.25m and 70cm bands to the event. The goal was to add variability and encourage people to try other bands, which may not behave the same as 2m.
While I was not able to participate due to last-minute travel for a funeral, the event went on without a hitch. One fun aspect was that we had our club bonus station, WA0RC, operate airborne mobile for part of the contest, with two club members flying around the area in a Cessna 172. This novel operation was well received and is something we’ll try to continue, particularly given the club’s ties to general aviation.
In the end, we had six non-bonus stations participate. The purpose of this event is to promote operation within and outside the club with a low barrier to entry, both from a skill and equipment perspective, and I think it succeeds in that area. However, I would like to see more participation in the future, especially from club members, so my goal for next year is to survey what could encourage that.
If you have a radio club looking for a fun event, I suggest trying something like this. While we use two hours to allow time for people to rove if they wish, even making this a one-hour event is a great way to get people on the air and trying something new. Our winner this year, Kyle, K0KN, also graciously passed off the gift certificate prize to Zach, KF0VLQ, who came in second place but put in a huge effort operating from multiple locations on multiple bands. Congratulations!
